Irrigation Canals Feeding Terraced Rice Paddies in Goa

by Ricardo Walker

Sunlight floods the terraced rice paddies of Goa during the monsoon, casting sharp reflections on the water-filled channels. A network of earthen irrigation canals snakes between the green slopes, directing flow toward the dense crop rows. A light fog hovers low over the water, softening the distant edges of the terraces while the midday heat remains palpable in the stillness of the air. The soil banks appear dark and saturated, against the vibrant emerald leaves of the young rice shoots. Water ripples gently as it enters the lower paddies, creating small disturbances on the glassy surface. at the edge is a cluster of water droplets clinging to the tip of a single leaf near the canal edge.
