Irrigation Canals Before Sunrise in Tanzanian Rice Fields

by Howard Hogan

Cold silver dawn light washes over a network of irrigation canals cutting through a harvested grain field near Dar es Salaam. The wet season leaves the soil dark and heavy with moisture, reflecting the perfectly clear sky above. Narrow channels of water snake across the flat terrain, their surfaces acting as mirrors for the pale morning glow. Dry stalks of rice lie scattered along the canal banks, against the smooth, liquid paths that guide the eye deep into the landscape. The stillness is absolute, with no movement disturbing the water or the surrounding earth. One droplet of condensation rests on the tip of a dried stalk at the water's edge.
