Frost Line Creeping Down Terraced Paddies at Dawn

Pale violet shadows pool between the stepped contours of the terraced rice paddies near Miragaia, Porto. A delicate white frost line marks the boundary where the dry season chill settles, creeping slowly down the rows as the first light of dawn begins to lift. Irrigation water trapped in the lower basins catches the faint rim light, turning the dark water into a sheet of shimmering silver that reflects the sky. The earth appears dry and cracked along the upper edges, against the wet, glassy surfaces below. Thin layers of ice rest on the base of the young rice stalks, their tips catching the cool glow. at the edge is one drop of meltwater sliding from a stalk onto the dark, wet soil below.
