Mist Trapped in Canadian Valley at Sunrise in across a storm-bright plain in Canada

Mist Trapped in Canadian Valley at Sunrise

by Teresa Warren

Pale grey fog clings tightly to the valley floor, held in place by a thick thermal inversion layer that cuts off the wind above. Diagonal ridges of dark green coniferous forest slope sharply downward, meeting a churning sea of white vapor. The storm-bright plain in the background glows with the harsh, direct intensity of first light, casting long, jagged shadows across the uneven terrain. Wind-blown grasses in the foreground bend in unison, their tips whipping against the stillness of the trapped air below. A thin ribbon of gold light strikes the highest tree branch, illuminating the texture of the needles before fading into the cool blue shadows of the mist. The edge of the fog bank forms a crisp, horizontal line against the darkening sky.
