Oil sheen on water under night sky in near Guadalupe

Oil sheen on water under night sky

by Frank Pace

Silvery winter light spills across a dark water surface near Guadalupe, revealing thin films of oil that fracture the reflection into iridescent bands. The colors shift from violet to green and gold where the oil spreads in smooth, concentric ripples. Above, the deepest night sky hangs heavy and starless, its darkness pressing down on the illuminated patches below. The water remains still, holding the oily film in perfect, unmoving layers. Tiny droplets of rain rest on the edges of the sheen, catching the faint light. The oil creates a shimmering bridge between the dark water and the sky, its colors fading into the shadows at the periphery. One droplet hangs suspended on the edge of a ripple, reflecting the faintest hint of violet.
