Iced Weather Station Mast Kiruna Spring in in Kiruna

Iced Weather Station Mast Kiruna Spring

by Faith Hall

Thick layers of translucent ice coat every surface of the weather station mast standing in the flat, snow-covered expanse of Kiruna. The metal framework glistens under the diffuse light of a heavy overcast sky, creating a stark contrast against the white ground. Early spring thaw conditions leave patches of slush at the base while the upper sensors remain encased in frozen rime. Symmetrical lines of the structure rise vertically, dividing the gray horizon into equal halves. Frost rests on the edges of the instrument arms, catching the weak daylight. One icicle hangs from the central crossbar, its sharp point reflecting the muted colors of the surrounding tundra.
