Greased Penstock Joint in Nigerian Sleet in above a spillway chute with spray rising in Nigeria

Greased Penstock Joint in Nigerian Sleet

by Jordan Chang

Fresh, translucent grease coats the flanged edges of a massive steel penstock expansion joint, catching the soft, diffused light of a midday overcast sky. Heavy sleet sheets fall across the industrial surface, beading on the metallic sheen before sliding down. Below, a spillway chute channels rising white spray against the gray steel. The setting is unmistakably a functional water facility in Nigeria, where the concrete and steel structures dominate the frame. Thick bolts secure the joint, their heads dark against the wet silver. Leading lines formed by the pipe's curvature draw the eye along the length of the machinery. at the edge is a single droplet of water clinging to the bottom edge of the grease-slicked seam, suspended in the falling rain.
