Winter Tetrapods Breakwater in Laos Canal in at a canal lock chamber in Laos

Winter Tetrapods Breakwater in Laos Canal

by Camila Stanton

Soft overcast light flattens the wet surfaces of massive black tetrapods arranged in a dense cluster within a canal lock chamber. The concrete blocks, coated in a sheen of water, rise from the churning surf where white spray explodes against their jagged edges. Above, dramatic clouds stack in heavy gray layers, diffusing the midday sun into a uniform glow that eliminates harsh shadows. The water moves with visible force, crashing against the engineered forms that dominate the frame. Tiny droplets hang suspended in the air near the impact zones, catching the flat light. The scene ends on a close-up of a single tetrapod corner where a thin sheet of water slides off the rough concrete edge into the dark pool below.
