Giant Mirrored Candles Towering in Tucson Shrine

by Alexandra Evans

Pale dawn light slips across the polished concrete floor of a Tucson nave, illuminating a surreal architectural anomaly. Enormous mirrored prayer candles rise from the ground like monolithic pillars, their faceted surfaces reflecting the dim interior in fractured shards. The glass scales tower over the space, stretching upward into the shadows where quiet darkness pools against the adobe walls. Each reflection distorts the narrow windows and wooden pews, creating a kaleidoscope of light that shifts with the angle of the sun. The impossible scale of these wax-and-glass giants dominates the room, yet their textures remain sharp and legible. A thin line of gold paint marks the base of the nearest pillar, at the base of the impossible structure to the floor.
