Glowing Lantern Path Inside Tennoji Shrine in at the foot of a stone altar in Tennoji, Osaka

Glowing Lantern Path Inside Tennoji Shrine

by Alan Haney

Stone lanterns line a narrow path leading toward a massive stone altar within the indoor sanctuary of Tennoji Shrine. Deep night permeates the space, yet the air remains still. Each lantern is carved from rough granite, their surfaces textured with age and mossy patches visible in the dim light. Late autumn leaves scatter across the stone floor, brown and brittle. The central lantern emits a soft, internal amber radiance that has no visible flame or bulb, casting long, quiet shadows against the surrounding walls. The light illuminates the dust motes suspended in the air and reveals the grain of the wood beams above. One reflection of the glow shimmers on the polished stone step at the altar's base.
