Stained Glass Light on Cathedral Sand Floor in at the foot of a stone altar in Portsmouth

Stained Glass Light on Cathedral Sand Floor

by Leila Kaur

North window sidelight pours through high cathedral stained glass, projecting fractured ribbons of crimson, sapphire, and amber across the stone floor. At the foot of a heavy stone altar in Portsmouth, the polished flagstones abruptly dissolve into rolling sand dunes that stretch across the nave. The impossible transition blends seamlessly without a visible seam, as if the earth itself has opened to the desert. Dust motes hang suspended in the bright beams, illuminating the texture of the sand grains against the smooth, cool stone. Polished surfaces catch small, sharp highlights where the colored light strikes the dunes. A deep blue shadow from the altar rests directly on the crest of the nearest sand ridge, at the base of the surreal landscape in the geometry of the sacred space.
