Shinto Shrine Mosque Kyoto Night String Lights in in a mosque prayer hall in Kyoto

Shinto Shrine Mosque Kyoto Night String Lights

by Layla Robles

Golden string lights hang in parallel rows above a polished wooden floor, creating warm pools of illumination across the space. Tall, symmetrical pillars and arched doorways define the perimeter of the room. Dust particles drift visibly within the vertical shafts of light, suspended in the air. Deep shadows gather in the corners where the light does not reach, against the bright, glowing center. A low wooden altar stands at the far end, centered perfectly between the flanking columns. The late summer setting is indicated by the stillness of the dust and the angle of the light. At the edge, a sharp, dark reflection of a hanging lantern rests on the highly varnished floorboards.
