Giant Flamingo Wades Past Dragon Tile at Nigerian Temple Site

by Linda Garner

Mud-slicked earth reflects the deepening violet of twilight under low-hanging gray clouds. A massive ceramic dragon roof tile rests on a wooden scaffold in the immediate foreground, its glazed scales catching the watery glow. Behind it, a flamingo the size of a giraffe wades through a shallow puddle, its long pink legs submerged in the brown water. The bird's neck stretches high, obscuring the distant horizon while its feathers appear soft against the rigid construction materials. Dust hangs heavy in the air, settling on the wet ground. The reflection of the giant bird ripples across the muddy surface, distorting the image of the dragon tile above. A wooden plank leans precariously near the water's edge.
