Forsaken Villa Dining Room Amidst Fig Leaves and Fog
Hard coastal glare slices through the open walls of a ruined villa dining room, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended above cracked stone floors. Tall fig leaves intrude from the overgrown garden, their serrated edges sharp against the pale, peeling stucco of the remaining pillars. Nettles cluster around the base of toppled columns, their green stalks against the bleached bone color of the ancient masonry. A thick layer of ground fog pools in the lowest depressions of the room, swallowing the feet of broken chairs and obscuring the boundary between interior and exterior. The low angle view emphasizes the height of the remaining archway against the bright, hazy sky. Sunlight catches the rough texture of the crumbling mortar where the plaster has finally given way to the elements. A shadow from a leaning column stretches across a patch of dry, cracked earth near the center of the space.
