Chimney Breast in Vine Choked Ruin Before Dawn in along a vine-choked corridor near Escuintla

Chimney Breast in Vine Choked Ruin Before Dawn

by Tonya Stout

A jagged brick chimney breast stands alone against a sky heavy with low-hanging gray clouds. Thick green vines choke the narrow corridor that once led to the house, their leaves glistening with monsoon moisture. The stone foundation is cracked and overgrown with moss, while the remaining wall fragment reveals layers of weathered red clay. Silvery winter light falls through the mist, casting a cool, flat tone over the scene. No roof remains to shield the interior, exposing the hollow space to the damp air. The vines drape heavily over the rubble, their tendrils weaving through the broken masonry. One crack runs vertically down the center of the remaining brickwork, filled with dark, wet earth.
