Ammonite Fossil Bed Near Adelaide in Rain
by Nova Huang
Sharp noon light flattens across a wet rock face near Adelaide, revealing spiraled ammonite fossils embedded in grey sedimentary layers. A fine drizzle coats the surface, turning the stone dark and glossy while droplets rest on the intricate ribbed textures of the ancient shells. Small measuring instruments rest on the uneven ground beside the exposure, their metallic surfaces reflecting the overcast sky. The rock strata run diagonally through the frame, separating the fossilized remains from the loose, rain-slicked earth. Puddles gather in shallow depressions around the base of the outcrop, mirroring the heavy clouds above. One ammonite spiral aligns perfectly with the vertical edge of a metal ruler placed for scale.
