Geologist Balancing on Scree Near Strata in Harare

by Brynn Parker

Low golden sunlight stretches long shadows across a steep slope of loose gray scree in Harare during the rainy season. A geologist balances carefully on the unstable stones, holding a bright yellow rock hammer in one hand while examining the exposed folded strata rising beside them. The wet earth shows dark patches where recent rain has settled, against the dry, dusty rock layers. Overhead, low-hanging clouds diffuse the fading light, casting a soft glow on the jagged geological formations. The converging lines of the rock layers draw toward a distant vanishing point where the slope meets the cloudy sky. One crack in the stone reflects the last light of day.
