Fig Tree Strangling Ruins in Tropical Forest

by Zara Russell

Deep indigo twilight washes the sky above a forest clearing where ancient stone columns lie toppled in the wet earth. A massive fig tree dominates the view, its thick aerial roots wrapping tightly around the crumbling masonry, creating a frame within a frame of dark organic shapes against the fading light. The scene is backlit, turning the leaves and roots into stark black silhouettes that obscure the texture of the stone beneath. Low hanging haze blurs the distant horizon, softening the edges of the forest canopy. Fresh green nettles grow in clumps among the broken stones, their jagged leaves catching the last blue glow. the mix of rigid decay and living growth defines the foreground, ending with a root tip pressing firmly against a fractured capital.
