Fig Tree Through Ruined Staircase Montenegro

by Dan Collier

Pale morning light bounces off crumbling plaster walls inside a collapsed lobby in Montenegro, illuminating a staircase cut directly through by a thick fig tree trunk. The tree's rough, grey bark splits the stone steps, forcing the masonry to curve around its growth. Broken plaster flakes lie scattered across the floor in large, dry patches, against the smooth, clean surfaces of the remaining stair treads. Late autumn shadows stretch softly across the concrete, highlighting the texture of the decaying architecture without cluttering the view. A narrow gap in the upper wall frames the scene, drawing attention to the interlocking stone and wood where the building surrendered to nature. at the edge shows a small chip of white plaster resting on the edge of the lowest step.
