Faded Frescoes Inside Ancient Tyre Chapel

by Don Jennings

Soft, overcast light falls through high openings, illuminating the rough-hewn stone interior of a chapel in Tyre. Peeling layers of faded fresco reveal underlying plaster, their ochre and blue pigments crumbling into dust. A wooden bench sits empty against the far wall, its surface worn smooth by centuries of use. Autumn leaves drift in through a broken archway, settling on the stone floor in shades of russet and gold. The air appears still, with faint reflections shimmering on a polished marble altar in the foreground. Cracks in the masonry trace geometric patterns across the walls, marking the slow passage of time. A patch of pale morning light touches the edge of a crumbling column, highlighting the texture of ancient dust.
