Coptic Church Rock Carving in Ramat Gan Chapel

by Brandon Donovan

Flat noon light floods the north window, casting sharp, geometric shadows across rough-hewn stone surfaces that mimic ancient Ethiopian rock. Stained glass panels cast patches of crimson and azure onto the uneven floor, against the warm glow of oil lamps settled deep in the corners. Arched doorways carved directly into the solid rock create strong leading lines that guide toward the altar. The dry season air is invisible, but the dust settles thick on the low stone ledges. Textured surfaces show the chisel marks of masons, while the stained glass colors bleed onto the rough plaster walls. One beam of light illuminates dust motes hovering above the stone step.
