Tokyo Shinto Altar Under Honey Light in at the foot of a stone altar in Tokyo

Tokyo Shinto Altar Under Honey Light

by Kane Hopkins

Honey-colored light fills the indoor shrine space, falling across the rough-hewn stone altar at the foot of the structure. Deep grooves mark the weathered gray rock, while dark wooden beams hang above against the warm glow. Through the glass walls, bare branches of the early winter forest stand against a fading sky. Muted reflections of the altar and window frame slide across the polished floor beside the stone base. The stone structure sits slightly off-center, with the intricate grain of the wood visible along the supporting posts. Cool gray stone meets the warm light at the edge of the offering tray.
