Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony in Meskel Square Shrine

by Knox Summers

Blue twilight settles over a shrine in Meskel Square, where warm string lights glow against the cooling air. A clay jebena sits centrally on a low mat, its dark earth tone against the soft blue ambient light. Beside it, small handleless cups rest in neat rows, their surfaces catching faint reflections from the overhead bulbs. Raindrops glisten on the wet ground and the rim of the clay vessel, creating a slick, shimmering texture under the artificial illumination. The shrine walls are lined with glowing lanterns that cast long, soft shadows across the floor. A thin mist hangs in the air, visible as faint streaks between the light sources. at the edge is one drop of water sliding down the curved side of the clay pot.
