Dolphins Sweep Through Night Kelp Oregon in along a kelp-fringed shelf in Oregon

Dolphins Sweep Through Night Kelp Oregon

by Dalton McDonald

A sweeping beam of white light cuts through the dark, winter ocean water, illuminating a dense cluster of plankton that glows like suspended dust. Within this luminous haze, a pod of dolphins moves in tight formation, their dark bodies appearing as smooth, fluid silhouettes against the bright beam. Tall kelp fronds drift vertically along the edges of the frame, their dark shapes swaying gently in the current. The water is cold and heavy with winter depth, the light source creating a stark contrast between the glowing particles and the surrounding shadow. Individual dolphins curve their backs as they navigate the bait ball, their sleek skin reflecting faint highlights from the passing lighthouse sweep before vanishing back into the deep blue black. at the edge is the sharp edge where the light beam meets the darkness, cutting a clean line through the swirling water.
