Dawn Irrigation Runoff in Terraced Melon Fields in among terraced rice paddies near Cameron Highlands

Dawn Irrigation Runoff in Terraced Melon Fields

by Willow Watts

Cold silver light spills across a wide panoramic expanse of terraced agriculture near Cameron Highlands. At the low end of a melon vine block, irrigation runoff gathers in shallow, reflective pools that mirror the dramatic, weather-shaped clouds overhead. The vines lie flat and heavy against the damp earth, their green leaves against the grey moisture. Terraced rice paddies step upward in the background, their stone and mud edges worn by seasonal shifts. The ground glistens with recent water flow, showing ripples where the runoff slows. Puddles catch the pale dawn sky, creating fragmented reflections of the cloud mass. A dark shadow from a vine leaf falls sharply across the surface of the nearest pool, defining the water's edge against the wet soil.
