Melon Vines on Irrigation Pipe at Dawn in between vineyard trellises in Australia

Melon Vines on Irrigation Pipe at Dawn

by Tony Preston

Darkened earth fills the foreground, its surface marked by puddled ruts left from recent rain. Thick melon vines tangle tightly around a weathered, horizontal irrigation pipe that cuts across the frame. The scene sits in deep shadow beneath the low angle of first light, which catches only the upper edges of the vines and pipe in a sharp rim of pale gold. Bare soil stretches out toward distant vineyard trellises in the background, their lines faint against the dim morning sky. The heavy, wet ground contrasts with the dry, cracked texture of the exposed pipe. one drop of water rests on the underside of a curled leaf, catching the faint edge of light before sliding back into the shadowed soil.
