Melon Vines Between Furrows After Flood in at the edge of a tea plantation in Monrovia

Melon Vines Between Furrows After Flood

by Tracy Chavez

Dark, wet furrows cut through the earth, their surfaces glistening where floodwater has recently receded. Sprawling melon vines stretch across the muddy ground in silhouetted lines, their leaves pressed low against the soil. The setting sun stands behind the rows, casting long shadows and turning the water trapped in the furrows into a shimmering ribbon of gold. The horizon shows the edge of a tea plantation, its rows of bushes standing tall against the bright sky. Dust particles hang suspended in the backlight, catching the fading light as the day turns. The texture of the mud is rough and clumpy, against the smooth, reflective sheen of the standing water. One leaf edge glows with a thin rim of orange light.
