Copper Light Over Irrigation Runoff in Indian Melon Fields

by Jessica Montoya

Warm copper-toned light spills across freshly watered soil where irrigation runoff has collected in shallow depressions between melon vines. Low-lying ground fog rests in the furrows, softening the edges of the green foliage. The water reflects the fading sky in distorted patches of orange and gray. Parallel rows of vines create strong leading lines that guide the view toward the distant horizon. The soil appears dark and saturated, against the lighter mist hovering just above the surface. Small ripples disturb the standing water, catching the last rays of the sun. A thin layer of sediment coats the water's edge where it meets the earth.
