Copper light on irrigation runoff pooling in melon vines

by Charlene Ramsey

Copper-toned light spills across a low-lying pool of irrigation water, creating a shimmering ribbon between rows of melon vines. The water surface reflects the fading sky, breaking into bright shards where the current slows. Wooden orchard ladders stand in silhouette against the glow, their rungs casting long, thin shadows that stretch across the damp earth. Plastic crates rest nearby, their dark forms at the base of the composition. The vines appear heavy and sprawling, their leaves catching the edge of the light. The water glistens with a metallic sheen, revealing the texture of the soil beneath. One ripple disturbs the pool's surface near the base of a ladder leg.
