First Light on Turquoise Plunge Waterfall Near Quito

by Lindsey Nielsen

Pale turquoise water plunges vertically into a deep basin, creating a mist that catches the first golden rays of sunrise. Dark volcanic rock walls frame the cascade, their rough, porous surfaces against the smooth, churning fluid. Above, heavy dramatic clouds in shades of slate and charcoal loom, broken only where the morning sun pierces through to illuminate the falling water. The pool below glows with intense color, reflecting the sky while the spray hangs suspended in the air. Fine droplets glitter against the shadowed stone at the base, where the force of the fall meets the stillness of the pool.
