Collapsed Bell Tower Inside Yazd Stone Chapel

by Rodney Castillo

Dust motes hang suspended in the thick north-window sidelight that cuts across the rough-hewn stone floor of a forsaken chapel in Yazd. The collapsed bell tower leaves a jagged void in the ceiling, exposing the pale blue of the early summer sky above the crumbling masonry. Sunlight pools against the curved arches, highlighting the sandy texture of the walls and the deep shadows where the roof once stood. Soft reflections shimmer on the polished stone surface near the base of a fallen pillar. One shaft of light illuminates a patch of dry, brittle grass growing through a crack in the foundation, marking the slow reclaiming of this sacred space.
