Dark, jagged volcanic rock stretches across the foreground under a pale autumn sky, its rough texture coated in patches of white frost and dried mud. A line of camels moves steadily across this black terrain, their humped silhouettes stark against the dimming light. Their coats bear the same frost and mud, clumping in heavy streaks where wind has driven the elements. To the right, the fogbound harbor mouth blurs into gray mist, hiding the water's edge. In the distance, the horizon glows with the warm, scattered points of city lights beginning to burn as dusk settles. The low angle emphasizes the scale of the lava field, making the caravan appear small against the vast, frozen stone. One patch of ice glitters on a sharp rock near the bottom edge.
