Camel Caravan on Black Lava Field in Canada in along a switchback approach in Canada

Camel Caravan on Black Lava Field in Canada

by Natasha Gilbert

White and gray mud crusts the heavy canvas flaps and leather straps of a camel caravan moving along a winding switchback road. The animals step carefully over the jagged, pitch-black surface of a solidified lava field that stretches into the distance. Above, layers of stacked gray clouds press low against the horizon, diffusing the bright midmorning light into a soft, even glow. A stiff wind whips the fabric of the loads, causing the material to ripple and strain against the wooden frames. Frost rests on the rough edges of the stone path, marking the turn of the seasons. The texture of the dried mud contrasts sharply with the smooth, glassy appearance of the volcanic rock beneath the heavy hooves. at the edge is the thin line of white frost tracing the edge of a leather saddle flap against the dark stone.
