Camel Caravan Crossing Salt Flats at Dawn in along a switchback approach near Windhoek

Camel Caravan Crossing Salt Flats at Dawn

by Patsy Berg

Soft overcast light spills across an endless expanse of white salt flats, where a line of camels moves along a winding switchback path near Windhoek. The dry season has stripped the landscape of green, leaving only the pale, cracked earth and the animals' dusty brown coats. Stacked clouds hang low and heavy, their gray undersides pressing against the horizon. Wind whips loose strands of hair from the camels' manes, creating a subtle blur that freezes the motion of their steady advance. From a low angle, the creatures appear monumental against the flat terrain. Shadows stretch long and soft beneath them, at the base of the scene. at the edge is a single hoof print pressed deep into the crusty salt surface, marking the path taken.
