Camel Caravan Crossing at Dusk Near Coptic Cairo

by Julie Graham

Twilight settles over a wide river crossing near Coptic Cairo as a line of dromedaries moves steadily along the muddy bank. The animals, their coats ranging from deep russet to pale sand, stand in a single file against a sky that has just lost its blue. Distant lights from the city glow in a soft, amber haze on the horizon, against the cooling shadows of the foreground. The camels breathe visible steam into the cool air, their long necks bent slightly as they navigate the uneven terrain. Ropes and leather harnesses hang loosely from their saddles, catching the last faint light. The water reflects the town glow in a shattered, shimmering strip, while the camel shadows stretch long and sharp across the wet sand.
