Morel Mushroom Among Terraced Plots at Golden Hour

by Daniela Blankenship

Rich amber light from the setting sun washes over a single morel mushroom rising from dry, golden-brown leaf litter. The porous, honeycomb cap of the fungus stands in sharp relief against the muted earth tones of the soil. Behind the subject, low-hanging clouds diffuse the sky above terraced garden plots that slope gently toward the horizon. The dry season air has left the surrounding vegetation brittle and pale, against the deep, saturated glow of the amber light hitting the mushroom's ridges. Shadows stretch long across the terraced steps, defining the texture of the ground and the distinct, irregular shape of the fungal cap. A thin shadow falls across the base of the stem where it meets the dry leaves.
