Water Flowing Uphill on Tiled Staircase in inside a tiled stair hall near Man

Water Flowing Uphill on Tiled Staircase

by Patricia Douglas

Tropical late-afternoon light floods a symmetrical tiled stair hall, illuminating a metal fire escape that zigzags down the center. The tiles are cool and glossy, reflecting the bright sky visible through an open upper landing. A light drizzle falls outside, yet inside, a distinct stream of water defies gravity, climbing upward along the slope of the metal steps. The liquid gathers into a perfect, still pool at the highest platform, suspended against the vertical drop. Warm tones from the wet metal contrast with the cool blue-gray of the rain-slicked tiles. Every rivulet and reflection is sharp, at the base of the impossible flow in a tangible, architectural reality.
