Staircase to Lavender Fields Under Starry Sky

by Zane Cantu

Heavy monsoon clouds press low over a field of blooming lavender near Dashilar in Beijing, their purple spikes glowing faintly under starlight. A wooden staircase emerges from the center, its landing defying physics by splitting into two paths: one spiraling upward into the starry void, the other descending into the dark earth below. The wood grain is sharp and wet, reflecting the faint ground glow that seeps through the overcast. Firelight flickers from a small lantern on the landing, casting warm orange shadows that stretch across the purple stems. The impossible structure anchors the surreal moment, its railings leading eyes both toward the cosmos and into the soil. One dewdrop rests on the bottom step, mirroring a distant star.
