Giant Umbrella Mushrooms in Bamboo Grove in beneath a wind-cut desert escarpment in Yunnan

Giant Umbrella Mushrooms in Bamboo Grove

by Javier Wiley

Dusk settles over a wind-cut desert escarpment in Yunnan, where wet-season clarity hangs heavy in the air. Tiny fireflies drift through a dense bamboo grove, casting soft green sparks against the dark stalks. In the foreground, ordinary twigs and leaves lie scattered on the damp earth, but towering above them are mushrooms with caps the size of open umbrellas, their gills catching the faint glow of a distant town on the horizon. The massive fungal caps cast deep shadows that stretch across the bamboo roots, creating a stark contrast between the tiny insects and the impossible fungi. One firefly rests on the rim of a giant cap, illuminating the wet texture of the mushroom surface.
