Banyan Roots Gripe Stone Temple Ruin Ujjain

by Trevor Pierce

Pale walls of the Ujjain temple nave reflect the soft glow of flickering oil lamps, casting a warm, uneven light across the damp stone floor. Thick, fibrous banyan roots descend from the high ceiling, wrapping tightly around a crumbling stone pillar in the center of the room. The roots appear dark and wet, against the rough, weathered texture of the carved masonry. Indirect afternoon light falls through high openings, creating deep shadows in the corners where the flamelight settles. The massive roots form a dark silhouette against the brighter, dust-moted air, showing the slow, silent grip of nature on the sacred structure. The wet season moisture is visible on the stone surfaces, making the carvings glisten slightly in the low light.
