Aerial Roots of Banyan Tree Cliff Edge in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Solapur

Aerial Roots of Banyan Tree Cliff Edge

by Makayla Callahan

Thick, fibrous aerial roots drape vertically from the gnarled banyan branches, their tan and grey surfaces textured with deep fissures. The roots hang over a rough, salt-encrusted cliff edge, disappearing into a pool of white ground fog that fills the lower void. Dry, brittle grass blades poke through the rocky soil, their golden hues muted by the soft, overcast light of late afternoon. The bark of the main trunk appears weathered and dark, against the pale mist below. Fine salt crystals glitter faintly on the stone surface where the roots make contact, showing the harsh, coastal air. The vertical lines of the roots create a dense curtain against the hazy, undefined drop-off.
