Mandarin Duck Drifting on South Australian Pond in in South Australia

Mandarin Duck Drifting on South Australian Pond

by Macy Hart

Vibrant orange and emerald feathers of a mandarin duck contrast against the dark, rain-streaked surface of a still forest pond. Fine vertical lines of light drizzle disturb the water, creating concentric ripples that distort the reflection of surrounding eucalyptus branches. The bird floats centrally within the right third of the frame, its iridescent wing patches catching the flat, diffuse afternoon light. Wet moss clings to submerged logs near the duck, while droplets bead along the curved back of the bird. The water reflects the grey sky above, blending seamlessly with the dark forest edges. One raindrop hits the water just behind the duck, sending a sharp, circular ripple outward across the dark surface.
