Winter Flood Barrier Seam Lined With Shells in along a levee path above floodwater in Missoula

Winter Flood Barrier Seam Lined With Shells

by Zachary Bender

Deep blue twilight settles over a concrete levee path in Missoula, where wet surfaces reflect the warm glow of nearby utility lights. A sturdy flood barrier runs into the distance, its vertical seam meticulously lined with a dense row of small, pale shells. These organic forms rest on the gray concrete, against the smooth, water-slicked texture of the wall. Wind whips loose strands of dry winter grass along the path edge, bending them sharply against the barrier. The scene is framed by converging lines that draw toward a vanishing point in the dark water below. The shells create a jagged, textured ridge that catches the low light, highlighting their rough edges against the cold, industrial gray of the flood defense.
