Using Awl in Fez in in Fez, Morocco

Using Awl in Fez

by Asher McClure

Sunlight slices through the narrow alley of Fez’s medina, striking a dusty wooden workbench where a leatherworker presses a brass awl into thick hide. The harsh afternoon light pools sharply on the bench’s edge, illuminating scattered scraps of tan leather and a coil of thick thread. Beside the tools, a blue and white porcelain jar holds a bundle of stiff writing brushes, their bristles frayed from use. The worker’s hands, stained with tannins, move with practiced precision, ignoring the bright zinnias spilling from a terracotta pot nearby.
