Adjusting Spanner in Fez
by Terry Floyd
Rain slicks the narrow cobblestones of a Fez alley, reflecting the amber glow of overhead sodium lamps as dusk settles. A leatherworker stands under a canvas awning, his hands busy adjusting a heavy adjustable spanner on a brass fitting, the tool’s steel gleaming against the wet, darkened wood of his workbench. Beside him, a stack of folded linen creases sits in a ceramic basin, their crisp white edges against the surrounding dampness and the rich, saturated hues of dyed hides hanging nearby. The tactile reality of craftsmanship, where the cold metal of the tool meets the organic texture of the materials, all framed by the deep, shadowed arches of the medina’s ancient stone walls.
