Coat Brush in Fez
by Daniela Cole
Sunlight slices through the lattice screen of a Fez workshop, illuminating a cluttered workbench where a leatherworker’s hands press a rough coat brush against the side of a tan saddle. Beside the active task, a small terracotta bowl holds dark dye, its rim stained with age, while a woven wicker hamper sits nearby, stuffed with scraps of hide and leather tools. The bright late morning light casts sharp, geometric shadows across the dust-moted air, highlighting the texture of the animal skin and the rough weave of the basket. In the background, the blurred shapes of hanging hides suggest a busy, lived-in space where traditional craftsmanship continues amidst the organized chaos of daily labor.
