Cluttered Bench in Fez
Under the flat, unforgiving glare of high noon, a leatherworker’s bench in the tannery district is cluttered with the tools of his trade. A metal dish rack sits inverted near a ceramic bowl, holding wet strips of hide that drip onto the worn wooden surface. Beside it, a claw hammer rests against a bone folder, evidence of recent shaping work. The worker’s hands, stained with tannins, move quickly, ignoring the scattered flower petals that have drifted in from a nearby courtyard window. A small thermometer hangs from a nail, its mercury high in the heat. In the background, woven baskets are stacked against a white-washed wall, their textures sharp in the direct light.
