Sunlight falls through the open-air roof of a historic tannery in Fez, illuminating rows of large stone vats filled with vibrant indigo, saffron, and crimson dyes. A worker in a white robe stands waist-deep in one of the basins, using a wooden paddle to agitate the liquid while another assistant carries a heavy leather hide across the stone walkway. The rough texture of the ancient walls contrasts with the smooth, glossy surface of the wet leather being prepared. In the background, the intricate zellige tilework of nearby buildings catches the early afternoon light, while the distinct shapes of copper tools and iron hooks hang from wooden beams, ready for the next stage of the traditional craft.
