Leatherworker at Evening Light in Fez

by Kenji Cline

A narrow alley in the medina of Fez glows with the amber spill of a streetlamp against deep blue twilight. A leatherworker sits on a low wooden stool, his hands busy with a strip of tan hide, a straight razor resting in his palm as he shaves the edge. Beside him, a stack of wool scarves in indigo and saffron waits for dyeing, their colors vibrant against the dusty stone walls. Enamel bowls, chipped and faded, hold water for rinsing tools near a clay stovetop where a small kettle whistles softly.
