Artisan Workbench in Fez
by Roger Gates
A sharp midday sun cuts through the narrow alley of Fez’s medina, illuminating a artisan’s workbench where chipped blue enamel bowls sit beside a wooden mortar and pestle. The light catches the intricate braided rug fibers draped over a nearby chair, their wool textures against the smooth, glazed ceramic surfaces. A brass shoehorn rests casually on the edge of a stack of leather goods, hinting at the shop’s focus on traditional footwear. The deep shadows of the surrounding zellige-tiled walls, creating a stark interplay of bright highlights and cool, shaded recesses that emphasize the tactile quality of the materials.
